Hey, Nicole,
Very true... It seems as if others went on the bandwagon as we say when Social Media really became popular. They did not start in the beginning, only starting when other software made it "easier" to get these items. I really believe that we need some kind of "real" certification. Not just a way to show that, "Yes, I do this and I'm perfect at it." It should be more of showing that they are actually good, certifying that they actually somehow know what they're doing. Specializations could be made as a way for a person to get what he "needs" instead of what he wants, but has no clue on what people know how to do...

Hello Nicole, I found you via a comment you made a couple of years ago regarding Ning.

I agree with your comments here, especially the "responsibility of every consultant to assess what the clients wants / haves / needs .."

[...] Just because you only met social media idiots does not mean that everybody is one … “Social Media Something” is what customers are looking for Believe it or not, “Social Media Something” is actually what works for the normal people (you know, the ones with the budgets). They want even more specific things, and I am waiting for it to come up in the “so called social media specialist” postings: “and there are even people who call themselves (insert your favourite play toy here) experts!”.
